Most of us wait eagerly for our deliveries, and the impatience while doing that is real! The bell rings, we sign or tap and the box is ours. Then comes the temptation to tear it open, toss the packaging, see what we got and move on with our day.

But the few minutes after an order arrives are the most useful minutes you will have if something is wrong. Returns, replacements and refunds all become easier when you catch problems early and have proof.

And here are eight quick checks to run every time a parcel lands at your doorstep.

Look at the outer packaging before anything else

Before you open the box, give it a good look. Is it torn, crushed, wet or sealed with tape that looks different from the rest? Damaged or resealed packaging can mean the item inside was handled badly or even swapped. If the box looks wrong, take photos right away and if the delivery person is still there, tell them before they leave. And if they left, you can always raise complaint in the app itself.

Record an unboxing video

A short, continuous video of you opening the parcel is the strongest proof you can have. Start with the sealed box and the shipping label visible, then show yourself opening it and taking out the item. If you later need to claim for damage, a wrong item or missing parts, this video answers most questions before they are asked. Keep the video safe, so no one can dispute it later.

Match the item with what you ordered

Open your order page and compare it with what you have in your hands. Check the product name, brand, size, model, colour, variant and quantity. Wrong sizes and slightly different models are among the most common order mistakes, and they are easy to miss if you only glance at the item.

That is particularly important when ordering groceries. For example, if you ordered 1 kg of apples, check whether the delivered quantity matches what you paid fr. If you have a weighed scale, weigh loose fruits and vegetables and take a photograph if there is a significant difference. If you ordered 1 kg and received 850 g, you may be eligible for partial and full refund, depending on the platform’s policy and the circumstances.

For packaged products, check the net weight printed on the pack. If the listing says 1 kg but the package contains only 900 g, that’s a discrepancy worth reporting.

Inspect for damage and missing parts

Once the package is open, give the product a proper inspection. Look for scratches, dents, cracks, stains, loose components or anything that seems out of place.

Also, check whether all the accessories and parts mentioned in the product listing are included.

Imagine ordering a mixer grinder that comes with three jars but finding only two inside the box. Or purchasing a new phone and discovering than an accessory listed as part of the package is missing.

Do not discard the packaging or assume that the missing part will turn up later. Take photographs of what you receive and contact customer support as soon as possible.

Check seals, expiry dates and the printed price

This is especially important when ordering food, skincare products, medicines and other items with expiry dates.

Check whether the seal is intact and look at the manufacturing and expiry dates. You do not want to receive a skincare product that is already close to its expiry date or a food item with damaged packaging.

For example, if you order a pack of face serum, check whether the seal is intact and whether the expiry date gives you enough time to use the product.

It is also worth checking the MRP printed on the package and comparing it with the price you were charged. Discounts, coupons and platform offers can affect the final amount, so look at the order breakdown rather than assuming every difference is an error.

Test that the product actually works

A product may look different than on the website or it may look perfectly fine on the outside and still have a functional issue. So, if possible, test it shortly after the delivery.

For electronics, check whether the device switches on, charges properly and performs its basic functions. If you ordered a Bluetooth speaker, for instance, connect it to your phone and check its sound, buttons and charging port.

You do not have to spend hours testing everything. Just make sure the product is in working condition before the return window becomes a concern.

Verify the invoice and warranty papers

It is easy to overlook the invoice and warranty documents while admiring a new purchase. But these are worth keeping, especially for electronics and appliances.

Check whether the invoice reflects the correct product and amount. If the product comes with a warranty, look for the warranty card, registration details and any instructions you may need later. Some brands require you to register a product online to activate its warranty.

While checking the package, also look out for promotional cards or leaflets tucked inside. You may come across offers promising cashback or rewards in exchange for leaving a product review.

For example, imagine ordering a pair of headphones and finding a card inside that says,” Scan this QR code, leave a five-star review and get 100 rupees cashback”. Before scanning the code or sharing the code or sharing your details, read the terms and conditions. Be cautious about offers that make a positive review a condition for receiving a reward.

Note the return window and keep the packaging

Look at your order page and find out how long you have to return or replace the item. Write the last date in your phone calendar so it does not slip by. Keep the box, tags and protective packaging until you are completely sure you are keeping the product, because many returns are only accepted when the item comes back in its original condition.

A little checking goes a long way

Online shopping has made it easier to get almost anything delivered to our doorstep. But receiving a parcel is only part of the experience. None of these checks takes more than a few minutes, and together they can help you avoid some of the most common online shopping headaches.

We spend our money on things we want to buy, so it is only fair to make sure what arrives is actually what we paid for. These small habits can make a real difference and help make your online shopping experience smoother.
